POMONA – Sunday afternoon proved that Year 1 in the Lance Thompson era was a success.
The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos scored two second-half goals – one by seniors Kevin Ramirez and the other by Miguel Abascal – as they closed the 2009 season with a 2-0 win over a strong Cal State San Bernardino team before 414 fans at Kellogg Field.
The victory was an important one as CPP closed the season with a 10-8-1 overall record and 8-7-1 in the CCAA. The 10 wins are CPP’s most since the Broncos went 12-6-3 in 1998 and the eight CCAA wins are their most since 1999.
Cal State San Bernardino dropped to 15-4-1 and 11-4-1 as it prepares for the CCAA Tournament that takes place this week in Turlock.
The victory was big in many ways. The Broncos finished with only their eighth non-losing season in the program’s 27-year history. And it was only the sixth winning season in school history – their first since going 9-7-2 in 1999.
The Broncos honored their 11 seniors on Senior Day and were rewarded by two of them.
After a scoreless first half, Ramirez put the Broncos on the board in the 65th minute. Teammate Tyler Reinhart hit a shot that caromed off Coyotes GK Arath De La Rocha and Ramirez was most opportunistic by placing the ball to the near post.
Six minutes later, Reinhart again played a big role. The Fresno junior drove to the right of the net and De La Rocha came out and tripped Reinhart when he had a clear opening at the goal.
A foul was called and Abascal buried the penalty kick.
The Coyotes out-shot the Broncos 21-12 and fired 11 SOG. Senior Thomas Ryan earned the start and turned back four shots. Senior Brad Jones began the second half and had six saves and earned the win.
Freshman Chris Otani came in with nine minutes remaining and had one save.
Abascal’s goal was his sixth on the season and he finished his four-year career sixth on the all-time points list with 40 and tied for sixth in career goals with 15.
Cal Poly Pomona recognized its 11 seniors in a pregame ceremony. They were: Abascal, Rigo Cardenas, Marc Glogowsky, Eric Gonzalez, Wayne Kao, Rodrigo Landauro, Derek Lindsey, Jones, Ramirez, Ryan and Dustin Suppe.
