WALNUT CREEK – Senior midfielder
Miguel Abascal was named a first-team All-CCAA selection and teammate
Tyler Reinhart earned second-team honors, the conference office announced Thursday.
Abascal, a Guatemala City native, completed his four-year career Sunday with six goals and six assists this season for the Broncos, who were 10-8-1 overall and 8-7-1 in the CCAA. The midfielder finished his four-year career sixth on the all-time points list with 40 and tied for sixth in career goals with 15.
He was an honorable mention selection his sophomore year.
“Miguel was a field general for us and a leader on and off the field,'' Broncos head coach
Lance Thompson said. “He had the ability to elevate the level of play for everyone else on his team.''
Reinhart, a Fresno native, was a two-time CCAA Player of the Week and led the Broncos in goals (10) and tied Abascal in assists with six. He also led the team in points with 26. The forward established the CPP single-game record and tied the CCAA record with four goals in the 4-2 victory over defending NCAA champion Cal State Dominguez Hills on Oct. 2.
“I felt that Tyler's work rate was second to none,'' Thompson said. “He's so dangerous on creating chances. He was a threat every time he had the ball.''
Reinhart earned honorable mention in 2008.
Abascal is CPP's 30th first-team selection and the first since defender Ben Van der Fluit in 2007.
Cal Poly Pomona enjoyed only its sixth winning season in the 27-year history of the program in Thompson's first year at the helm. It marked only the fifth double-digit victory season and the first since 1998.
