SAN FRANCISCO – Both Cal Poly Pomona cross country teams finished fifth in Saturday’s NCAA West Regional, competed at Speedway Meadows in venerable Golden Gate Park.
The women’s team finished with 197 points. Senior
Tiffany Turner was the top Bronco as she completed the 6,000-meter layout in 21 minutes, 53.8 seconds. She was followed by junior
Amber Hebb, 30th (22:34.2) and junior
Elizabeth Soria, 35th (22:51.0).
Junior
Sarah Garcia placed 55th (23:21.7), freshman
Tiffany Dinh, 58th (23:23.1), senior
Denise Salceda, 102nd (24:20.2) and freshman
Lauren Parr, 122nd (24:55.9).
The University of Alaska Anchorage won the meet with 35 points. CCAA champion Chico State was second (58) and Seattle Pacific, third with 75 points. Western Washington was fourth with 121 points.
The top four women’s teams advance to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 21 in Evansville, Ind.
Senior
Jersain Torres was the top Bronco male runner, as he earned West Region honors with his 13th-place finish. The Anaheim native ran the 10,000-meter race in 31:45.8 and led the Broncos with 129 points.
Junior
Matt Prentice was second for CPP (16th – 31:53.1) and senior
Mariano Baez completed his four-year career, placing 22nd (32:23.1).
Other Broncos were: junior
Jose Marquez (39th – 33:25), junior
Stephen Kent (42nd—33:18.4) and junior
Jose Lara (55th – 33:55.3).
Chico State won the event with 42 points and Western Washington followed with 74. Alaska Anchorage was third with 96 points and Western Oregon, fourth with 105 points.
