RIVERSIDE – A host of personal bests were set by Bronco cross country athletes Saturday as CPP participated in the UC Riverside Invitational.
Senior Denise Salceda and junior Sarah Garcia each broke 19 minutes for the first time on a 5,000-meter course and senior Jersain Torres finished 20th in the men's race.
“Our top five for our women were all inside of a minute together,'' Broncos coach Troy Johnson said. “We got #Tiffany (Turner)# competing for the first time this season and Denise and Sarah dropped a significant amount of time from our last race at Fullerton.''
Junior Amber Hebb led the Broncos with a time of 17:55.7 and finished 42nd. Turner, who earned All-American honors last season in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, was 63rd (18:13.0). Salceda placed 109th (18:50.7), Garcia 111th (18:51.6) and freshman Tiffany Dinh 113th (18:51.9).
The Broncos were 15th of 27 teams.
Torres was the top Division II performer in the race that was won by nationally-ranked Brigham Young. He ran the 8,000-meter layout in 24:48.0. Junior Matthew Prentice was CPP's second finisher at 27th with a time of 25:01.3.
The Broncos were fifth with 177 points. BYU won the event with five of its runners inside the top seven.
“There were a number of Division I teams competing today and our guys finished as the top Division II team,'' Johnson said. “We had great pack running. We're still waiting on some to step it up, but we're making progress. Seven guys under 26 minutes against that type of field is a good sign.''
The Broncos will next compete at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday.
