POMONA, Calif. - Courtney Alberi and Kristin McNeese of the Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team took time away from their studies Friday afternoon to meet kids from the Boys and Girls Club of Pomona Valley.
“After the budget cuts we lost our sports director, so the children can only practice recreational sports two or three times a week with general supervision,” programs specialist Rigo Estrada said. “The kids love that you are here because they look up to you a lot. This time will give them a chance to develop their skills rather than just play on their own.”
The two players were given a tour of the facility and introduced to the children. Then, McNeese and Alberi set up practice drills in volleyball and basketball so that the kids could learn fundamentals and warmup for competitions later on in the day.
“It's always a good feeling to see how sports can give kids an outlet in life,” McNeese said. “The kids had a great time playing against us.”
To conclude the session, McNeese and Alberi joined a few CPP staff members in challenging the children to a game of full-court basketball. The volleyball stars might want to stick to their No. 1 sport though, as the kids from the Boys and Girls Club ended up victorious in the contest.
After the winning squad scored the final points, the crowd of kids cheering on their friends swarmed the court in celebration.
