POMONA -- Broncos head coach Scott Davis, who led Cal Poly Pomona to its first NCAA Tournament berth in five seasons this past March, has resigned after three seasons at the helm.

Davis, who owned a 50-37 overall record, cited personal reasons for his decision. He led CPP to its best season in six years as the 22-7 Broncos played in the opening round of the NCAA West Region Tournament in Seattle in March. They finished second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with an 18-4 record and reached the CCAA Tournament semifinals for the second time in his three seasons.

“At this time in my life, my family and I feel it is best to relocate back to Northern California to be closer to the rest of our family,'' Davis said. “With the birth of our second child, the support of our family is missing and we feel it is extremely important to be closer to home and allow our children the opportunity to spend as much time as possible with their grandparents.''

Davis improved the Broncos in each of his three seasons. He led CPP to a 12-16 record in 2007-08 when the Broncos reached the CCAA Tournament semifinals after an upset win at No. 2 and NCAA participant CSU San Bernardino. In 2008-09, the Broncos had their first .500 season since 2004-05 with a 16-14 slate.

“Coach Davis has done an outstanding job of re-energizing the Women's Basketball program,'' Director of Athletics Brian Swanson said. “ Under his tutelage, the program improved academically, became a playoff contending team and was extremely active in community service. His energy, excitement and passion for the program will be missed. He has always put family first and our very best wishes are for him and his family in their future.''

During Davis' three seasons, his players earned a combined seven All-CCAA honors, one CCAA Freshman of the Year honor (Reyana Colson, 2007-08), three Daktronics West Region honors, two WABC/State Farm West Region honors (Colson, twice), two Honorable Mention All-American honors (Colson, twice) and three CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine District VIII Academic honors (Colson, twice; Stephisha Walton, once).

“I hope that the hard work that I have put in over the past three years will continue to pay off for the team as they continue to work to reach their goals,'' Davis said. “I feel that I am leaving the program in a better position than it was three years ago. We were able to reach the NCAA Tournament and had numerous players earn personal accolades both athletically and academically. I look forward to following the success of the team as it continues its climb to the top of the CCAA.''

Prior to Cal Poly Pomona, Davis spent 2006-2007 as an assistant coach at Sonoma State and at Sacramento State in 2005-2006.

Davis served three seasons (2002-2005) as the head women's basketball coach at then-NAIA Dominican University in San Rafael. The Penguins, now members of the NCAA Division II Pacific West Conference, were 81-20 overall and Davis' teams won two California Pacific Conference championships and one conference tournament title. He was twice named conference coach of the year.

The Broncos have won a record-tying five NCAA Division II championships (1982, 1985, 1986, 2001 and 2002) in their history and have won more postseason games (48) than any other program.

A national search will take place immediately, according to Swanson.
