DALLAS - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team proved to be well represented in the first All-West Region honors announcement of the 2012 season, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) officials announced Wednesday.
The four Broncos featured on the All-West Region lists included two pitchers and two position players, as senior right-hander
Geoff Broussard earned a First Team spot, junior righty
Erick Ruvalcaba landed a Second Team selection and senior catcher
Jenzen Torres joined senior first baseman
Chris Miller on the Honorable Mention list. As a team, the Broncos narrowly missed the conference and NCAA postseasons marks of 31-18 overall and 23-17 in league play.
Broussard maintained an earned run average of 1.58 through 2012 while collecting 82 strikeouts in 97 innings thrown. A two-time California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Pitcher of the Week this year, Broussard recorded seven complete games and two shutouts in his 12 starts.
Ruvalcaba went undefeated this past season with a record of 7-0, ranking third in the CCAA for wins. He also threw the second-most innings among conference pitchers with 94. Through that workload, Ruvalcaba carried an ERA of 2.49 while holding opposing hitters to a .229 average.
For Broussard and Ruvalcaba, this marks their first appearances as All-West Region selections. Meanwhile, Torres has become a regular with 2012 representing the third season in his four years as a Bronco that he's been an All-West Region pick.
This past season, Torres led the Broncos in homeruns (8), on-base percentage (.431) and slugging percentage (.503). He excelled defensively behind the plate as well, tallying a fielding mark of .992. With eight homers in 2012, he pushed his career total to 34 to become the program's all-time leader.
Miller proved to be a clutch hitter for CPP this year as he delivered 44 runs batted in, the second-highest total in the CCAA. He also shined defensively, tallying a fielding percentage of .995 through 2012. Miller contributed key hits time and time again, with the most prominent being an extra-inning homer on March 10.
Western Oregon, the top seed in the West Region Championships, collected top honors as Grady Wood was named Pitcher of the Year and Jeremiah Robbins received the Coach of the Year recognition. The Player of the Year selection went to Cal State L.A.'s Daniel Duran.
The two other All-West Region announcements - American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Daktronics - will likely be released later this week. NCBWA All-American Teams are expected to be announced on Thursday, May 24 or Friday, May 25.
