CLAREMONT, Calif. - With heptathlete
Jillian Schmidt and thrower
Samantha Swanson leading the way, the Cal Poly Pomona women's track and field team posted a long list of impressive marks Saturday at the Rossi Relays in Claremont.
After capturing four first-place performances in the season opener last week, Schmidt continued her development Saturday while competing against a much more challenging field. The senior from Diamond Bar placed second in the high jump with a 5-5.75 mark, leaving her just one centimeter shy of a "B" provisional qualifying mark. She also anchored the Broncos' 4x400 relay with a 57.75 split.
Swanson has also gotten off to a great start in the 2013 campaign, taking first in the hammer throw last week at UC San Diego and then placing second in the same event Saturday in Claremont. She recorded a distance of 148-4, trailing only Lauren Chambers of Division I USC. A junior from Henderson, Nev., Swanson also proved to be the top Division II competitor in the discus as she went for 135-1 in that event.
Senior
Brandi Gerardo raced well in the 100-meter hurdles, taking fifth overall after crossing the line in 14.89. Teammate
Ngozi Agwuenu, who placed second in the conference last season in the triple jump, finished sixth in that event Saturday with a 36-0.75 distance.
The Cal Poly Pomona men's and women's track and field teams will return to action Friday and Saturday when they host the Pomona Preview Meet at Mt. San Antonio College's Hilmer Lodge Stadium. For a complete schedule of the meet,
