NEW ORLEANS - Competing in a wide range of events translates into more team points and that's been a recipe of success for the Cal Poly Pomona women's track and field squad this season.
Four Broncos have received NCAA Division II All-West Region honors for 2013, U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) officials announced Friday. Demonstrating their versatility, three of those four student-athletes collected All-Region selection in more than one event.
All four Broncos are part of the group headed to the NCAA Division II National Championships as
Tiffany Dinh received All-West Region recognition in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter events,
Angela Garcia was featured for the 100- and 200-meter sprints,
Samantha Swanson earned the regional honors for the hammer and discus throws and
Jillian Schmidt was recognized for her success in the high jump.
The top five from each region in individual events and each member of a relay ranked in the region's top three have earned the All-Region distinction.
That group of four led the Broncos to a third-place finish at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships earlier this month as that marked the first time CPP had placed within the top three in more than a decade. Garcia, a senior from Hanford, swept the 100- and 200-meter events to earn the CCAA Newcomer of the Year award.
The D-II championship meet will be held from Thursday, May 23 through Saturday, May 25 in Pueblo, Colo. Colorado State Pueblo hosts the event at the
