POMONA, Calif. - Four members of the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team have received All-West Region honors, officials announced Monday.
Junior forward
Christian Gonzalez Diaz and senior midfielder
Daniel Garcia Jr. earned a spot on the All-West Region First Team while senior defender
Jose Ortega and junior forward
Alexander Turkson were selected to the Second Team.
The Broncos finished 17-1-2 through the 2014 season and captured a sweep of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular season and tournament titles.
Earlier this month, Diaz received the CCAA Offensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year awards. He scored 10 goals and added three assists this season. Two of his scores came in the CCAA Championships postseason.
Joining Diaz on the All-West Region First Team is Garcia, who also was an All-CCAA First Team selection. With 13 assists this year, Garcia ranks at No. 2 on the NCAA Division II leaderboard for that statistic.
As the leader of the Broncos' defense, Ortega has collected a wide variety of honors this year, including CCAA Defensive Player of the Year and now All-West Region Second Team selection. He finished as the team leader in minutes with 1,851.
Turkson proved to be a tremendous addition to the CPP lineup this year as the junior transfer totaled six goals and three assists in his debut season as a Bronco. Four of his six scores ended up being game-winning goals.
The annual NCAA Division II Men's Soccer All-West Region Teams are sponsored by Daktronics, Inc. and voted on by the region's sports information directors. The Daktronics/NCAA Division II All-West Region First Team selections will now be included on the All-America ballot. The 2014 Daktronics NCAA Division II All-America Team will be announced on Dec. 3, three days prior to the Division II Championship.
