POMONA, Calif. - Heading into the first week of December play, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team will head north to take on a pair of Bay Area teams. On Friday at 7:30 p.m., the Broncos will challenge the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay. On Saturday at 7:30 p.m., the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters will host CPP.
Looking at the season thus far, the Broncos have earned a 3-2 overall record with an 0-1 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The Pioneers have amassed a 2-3 tally, and Friday's game will mark their first conference matchup.
Last season, the CPP squad secured a victory on both occasions that the Pioneers and Broncos met. In the first meeting in Hayward, the Broncos obtained a 66-52 win in what was then their best defensive performance of the season. They limited the Pioneers to a 34.5 shooting percentage overall. In that game, the Pioneers poured in only five of their 24 three-point attempts.
The second game between the squads in 2013-14, "Homecoming Game" for CPP, also provided a record-setting sellout crowd at Kellogg Gym. Not ones to disappoint a large crowd, the Broncos defeated the Pioneers 73-53. That ended up as the second-largest win margin for the Broncos in CCAA play last season.
Terrence Drisdom,
CCAA Player of the Week honoree earlier in 2014-15, leads the way for the Broncos in a few categories heading into this weekend's games. He has registered the most field goals, three pointers, free throws, defensive rebounds, overall rebounds, steals, blocks, and overall points.
Drisdom's 17.6 points per game average places him at third on the conference leaderboard for that category. His 7.6 rebounds per game and 38 total boards has earned him fourth place in both categories. Drisdom's five blocks puts him at fourth as well.
Drisdom and
Barry Bell are at the top of the CCAA steal leaderboard, recording steal totals of 15 and 14 respectively. Bell has proven to be a phenomenal team player, as he has dished out 20 assists on the season, to lead CPP and take second in the conference for that category.
For field goal percentage, senior
Daniel Rodriguez currently holds second place in the CCAA and leads the Broncos as his 21-for-32 performance gives him a 65.6 percentage.
Looking ahead to Saturday's game, the Otters have also secured a 3-2 tally this season. Their conference opener is Friday against the Tritons of UC San Diego.
