POMONA, Calif. – In the height of the 2014 track and field regular season, one of Cal Poly Pomona's most famous Hall of Fame members - Chi Cheng - received recognition during the Mt. SAC Relays festitivites.
A living legend who is considered the greatest female athlete in Taiwanese history, Cheng was honored at the Mt. SAC Relays Hall of Fame banquet. Several current Broncos, including head coach
Octavious Gillespie-Bennett and conference champion hurdler
Heather Corder, attended the ceremony in support of Cheng.
Cheng, a member of the Mt. SAC Relays Hall of Fame, is the 1968 Olympic Bronze Medalist in the 80-meter Hurdles as well as the Asian Games Gold Medalist in the 100-meter dash. In 1969, she broke or tied three world records in a span of a week. A year later, she became the first woman to run 10.0 seconds in the 100 yard dash and was named the Associated Press Athlete of the Year in 1970.
Cheng parlayed her success on the track into a successful career back home, first leading the Taiwanese Track and Field Federation. Later she served the people of Taiwan as a Legislative Member for a decade and as a National Policy Advisor, under President Ma Ying-jeou.
Today, Cheng is the national spokesperson for walking and fitness in Taiwan, where posters and advertisements bearing her smiling face can be found throughout the island nation.
It's been more than 40 years since Cheng competed at CPP but she still holds five of the university's track and field records, including the 100, 200 and 400 races along with the long jump and 100-meter hurdles.
Three members of the 2014 Broncos' track and field program will compete in the NCAA Division II National Championships this Saturday, including
Jessica Giacoletti in the high jump with Austin Allen and Justin Ellerbee starring in the pole vault.
In February, the Cal Poly Pomona Intercollegiate Athletics department re-launched its Hall of Fame as part of Homecoming and Family Weekend and the university's 75th Anniversary.
The Broncos recognized the current 51 Hall of Fame members, a group that includes Cheng, and also inducted a new five-person Class of 2014 that featured Tabreshia C. Lawrence-McIntyre, Karen Miller, Ruth Van't Land-Parkes, Jim Sackett and Lisa Ulmer. To read about that ceremony,
