POMONA, Calif. - After a successful career with the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team,
DeRonn Scott was destined for big things. He was picked up by the Providence Sky Chiefs of the American Basketball Association and after a productive season on the east coast, Scott will now move on to New Zealand. The 6-foot-6 native of Rancho Cucamonga has signed with the Nelson Giants, who play out of the National Basketball League (NBL) of New Zealand.
Scott is one of three new signees that head coach Tim Fanning expects to make a huge impact. Along with the former CPP student-athlete, the Giants signed a 6-foot-8 center, and another 6-foot-6 guard. Scott will likely be the ballhandler on the court, and will use his physique to make plays happen for the Nelson Giants.
"DeRonn is a 6-6 guard with excellent playmaking abilities," said coach Fanning in an interview with Pete McNae of the Nelson Mail. "Defensively he is very versatile and will give us options… he has a great feel for the game and I think he will be a guy that provides different things on any given night."
In his three seasons at Cal Poly Pomona, the Broncos went 69-18. After the 2013-14 campaign, Scott earned a spot on the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-West Region Second Team.
Scott led the Broncos to a 22-7 record as CPP finished second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular season before advancing into the second round of the NCAA postseason.
Recognized as a Daktronics All-West Region Second Team honoree, Scott finished the year with a scoring average of 14.3 points per game. He also proved to be a tremendous catalyst for the CPP offense, ranking fourth in the CCAA for assists per game with a 3.8 mark.
"This is a great opportunity for DeRonn," said CPP head coach
Greg Kamansky. "He was a great player while he was here and we are proud of him for being able to represent our program overseas. He added his name to the long list of players who have played professionally overseas and he deservedly has been given a good opportunity. I know he will represent our program well over there."
The 2014-15 Broncos return to action Friday with a home game against Cal State Monterey Bay.
