With the Broncos' 69-56 defeat of Chico State on Saturday night, CPP head coach
Greg Kamansky earned career win No. 330 to become the Broncos' men's basketball all-time leader in victories.
Kamansky passes Bob Stull to move into sole possession of the No. 1 spot on that list. The win also marks the team's 14th of the season. So far in 2015-16, CPP has amassed a stellar 14-1 record, complete with a 7-1 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
"One of the smartest things I have even done is surround myself with great people," said Kamansky. "
Damion Hill and all of my assistants throughout the years have been great. We are able to recruit good kids and talented players, so it's a team win. To get the record against a skilled team like Chico is special. We had a good game tonight and I'm proud of our guys, we competed and played well."
The Broncos are now tied with just the UC San Diego Tritons at the helm of the CCAA. Both teams are now 7-1 after their wins on Saturday night. Chico State, who was the third in the three-way tie, has dropped to 6-2 in conference play with a 12-3 mark on the season.
CPP was led by
Jordan Faison, who locked down his fourth double-double of the season with a 24 point, 10 rebound showing. His point tally led both teams as he was the only player to breach 20. The Broncos had two other members reach the double-digit point threshold as
Daylan Lawrence scored 12, and
Chris Sullivan amassed 11.
The nationally-leading Broncos' defense limited the visiting Wildcats to just a 31.2-percent shooting from the field with a 12.5-percent showing from beyond the arc. The Green and Gold found their mark on six long range shots and 49.1 percent of their shots from the floor.
The Green and Gold led Chico in bench scoring as well, as the Broncos' tallied 19 points to the Wildcats' 14.
In the second half, with one minute to go in the contest, the Broncos held their largest advantage of the game, a 17-point spread. The Wildcats pushed back at the end and dropped the CPP lead to the 13 points they would win by.
In the second half, the battle was fierce, and the Wildcats went on an 11-point spree to drop the Broncos' lead to a mere two points. In CPP fashion though, the Green and Gold bounced back with two 10-point runs to gain back a 17-point advantage.
The Broncos will return to action on Friday, Jan. 15 as they travel to the Eagles Nest to challenge Cal State L.A. The contest will begin at 7:30 p.m. and marks the second meeting of the two squads this season. The first contest between the two teams back in December ended with a 65-59 Bronco win.
