POMONA, Calif. – After transferring to the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos at the beginning of the 2016 season,
Jared James has been selected by the Atlanta Braves in Round 34 of the 2016 MLB Draft.
James was overall selection No. 1009 and the fourth Bronco taken in the draft. Also chosen with James were
Peter Bayer,
Michael Koval, and
Ryan Olson. The addition of those three marks nine Broncos selected in the MLB Draft in the past two seasons, the most of all Division II teams.
A native of Sacramento, James transferred to CPP from Long Beach State for his senior season of eligibility.
An immediate impact was made on the Broncos' squad by the outfielder as he played in all 61 of the Green and Gold's games and made a start in 59 of those games.
James' ability to get on base was well shown as he reached safely in 58 of the Broncos' 61 games, including a pair of streaks that tallied more than 20 games.
His total numbers on the 2016 season were an average of .312 as he tallied a team-leading 72 hits. He also lead the Broncos with 51 runs scored and was second with 38 RBIs.
The senior recorded a .494 slugging percentage as he was second on squad with seven homeruns and led the team with 17 doubles. He also was tied for the team lead with a pair of triples. His on base percentage was .411 as his 72 hits was coupled with a team-leading 32 walks.
James is a noticed threat on the bases as he stole 14-of-18 bases attempted. In the outfield he was flawless, recording 76 putouts without a single error.
His debut season in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) saw him earn All-CCAA First Team Honors.
