POMONA, Calif. – Things just keep looking up for
Michael Koval of Cal Poly Pomona baseball. After being named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Pitcher of the Year) for his performance on the mound, he was chosen by the Seattle Mariners in the 2016 MLB Draft.
He was picked in Round 11 of the Draft and was overall pick No. 327 and the second Bronco selected. Also chosen with Koval were
Peter Bayer,
Ryan Olson, and
Jared James. The addition of those three marks nine Broncos selected in the MLB Draft in the past two seasons, the most of all Division II teams.
Koval, an All-American in 2016, played for the CPP squad for three seasons. His performance on the mound included a conference leading 1.86 earned run average and a second-best 10-3 record on the season.
Through 96.2 innings pitched in the 2016 season, Koval tallied 73 strikeouts and limited opposing batters to a .214 average and allowed just five extra-base hits, all of which were doubles.
In three seasons with the CPP team, the junior from Alta Loma, recorded an overall record of 14-3. Through 669 batters faced he allowed a mere 14 extra-base hits and just a single homerun. All told, opposing hitters batter .219 against the righty.
He pitched a total of 161.2 innings for CPP through 47 appearances on the bump.
Koval was one of five Broncos featured on the All-West Region Team and earned First Team All-CCAA Accolades along with his Pitcher of the Year nod. He also earned a spot on the ABCA/Rawlings All-West Region Team for his performance in 2016.
He helped the Broncos on the mound to back-to-back West Region Titles and a pair of trips to Cary, N.C., both of which the Green and Gold finished third nationally.
