POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona Department of Intercollegiate Athletics finished another successful year in 2016-17 with nine teams making the California Collegiate Athletic Association playoffs, two teams making NCAA Regional appearances and four teams advancing to Nationals.
CPP finished third overall in the race for the CCAA Robert J. Hiegert Commissioner's Cup trophy, tallying 82.94 points over the course of the season
The Broncos tallied 61 student-athletes on the CCAA Academic teams while over 40 athletes were selected to CCAA All-Conference lists. In the conference's end of the year academic awards list, CPP finished with 60 athletes holding a 3.4 or higher GPA throughout the 2016-17 academic year.
Amongst the many athletic and academic accomplishments, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics also unveiled the brand new Bronco Performance Center, giving student-athletes a professional quality training facility to use throughout the year.
Men's Cross Country:
For the men's cross country team, the 2016 campaign ended with another trip to the NCAA National Championships, making it four years straight.
CPP tied their best performance at Nationals since 2013, claiming eighth-place behind
Ruben Dominguez's time of 30:59.6, which placed 23rd in the field. Dominguez's time earned himself All-American honors for the first time in his career.
At the conference level, the Broncos hosted the 2016 CCAA Championships, turning in a second-place finish behind
Christian Rodriguez who finished 10
th and
Mark Huizar who finished in 11
th. Both runners earned All-CCAA accolades.
Sophomore
Kyle Miller led the Broncos academically, being named to the CCAA All-Academic list for the fall season.
Women's Cross Country
The 2016 season proved to be a memorable one for the Cal Poly Pomona women's cross country team, who finished their season at the NCAA Division II National Championships for the third time in the team's history.
The season also included the Broncos playing host to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross Country Championships in which Pomona finished in second-place. Led by
Calene Morris, who finished the 6,000-meter race in 22:10.9 to take 11th overall, the Broncos tied their best finish in program history.
At the NCAA West Region Championships, the Broncos punched their ticket to Nationals with a fifth place finish. CPP's effort at Nationals saw a 19
th place finish on the 6,000-meter course in Saint Leo, Fla., where
Lorraine Fernandez moved to No. 6 on the program's all-time leaderboard for the 6K, placing 56th individually with a time of 21:51.2
The Broncos also had a strong finish off the course in 2016, tallying seven athletes on the CCAA 2016 Fall All-Academic list.
Men's Soccer
The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team concluded the 2016 season with a strong performance in the NCAA West Regional Tournament, advancing to the championship game.
After finishing third overall in the CCAA regular season standings, the Broncos fell in the opening round before knocking off Sonoma State and Simon Frasier at Regionals to make the title game.
Sergi Monso and
Nadeer Ghantous led the Broncos all season, earning All-West Region honors and being selected as NCAA All-Americans. Monso tied for the most goals scored in the conference with 12 while Ghantous led a defense that gave up the second fewest amount of goals with 14 through 22 games.
Women's Soccer
In his first year at the helm, head coach
Jay Mason led the Broncos to a fourth-place finish in the CCAA, making the conference tournament, something CPP has done for the last three seasons in a row.
The Broncos ranked fifth in the CCAA in goals allowed, giving up only 19 goals on the year while scoring 17 of their own.
Sydney Yates led the offense for the Broncos, tallying 38 shots (5
th most in the CCAA) and scoring five goals in 15 games played.
Off the field, women's soccer led all fall sports with 13 athletes on the CCAA All-Academic list, the second largest total for any team on the year.
Volleyball
After a slow start to the conference schedule, the Broncos finished the regular season on a four-match win streak, winning on the road against at CSU East Bay and Monterey Bay before closing the year at home in wins against San Francisco State and Sonoma State.
As a team, the Broncos ranked fifth in the conference in blocks (186.5), seventh in digs (16.95/set), sixth in kills (12.73/set), and sixth in assists (11.89/set).
CPP earned two All-CCAA recipients as
Alexandra Gresham was named to the All-CCAA Second Team while
Samantha Figueroa was an Honorable Mention.
Off the court, five Broncos were named to the CCAA All-Academic team in
Andrea Bosnic,
Desi Martin, Figueroa,
Alexandria Bollier and
Kristen Hamlin.
Men's Basketball
The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team strung together one of the longest winning streaks in the CCAA, totaling six wins in a row, winning nine of their last 11 games of the season to earn a sixth place finish and an appearance in the CCAA postseason tournament.
The Broncos were one of the top defensive teams in the league during the 2016-17 season, allowing only 64.7 points per game, the third lowest total in the conference.
Jordan Ogundiran led CPP with 12.3 points per game, earning All-CCAA Second-Team while
William Christmas was named the conference's Freshman of the Year, averaging 8.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
Women's Basketball
One of the toughest defensive teams throughout the season, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team finished 17-11 overall, and 14-6 in the CCAA to claim third-place in the season standings. Appearing in the conference postseason tournament, the Broncos defeated Cal State San Bernardino in the opening round to advance to the semifinals.
Forwards
Chelsea Waddy-Blow and
Priscilla Brooks were dominant throughout the season, both earning All-CCAA First-Team accolades. Waddy-Blow ranked 12
th in the league in scoring with 12.6 points per game along with 6.6 rebounds while Brooks finished with the third highest rebounding average at 8.3 rebounds per game.
Also earning All-CCAA recognition was
Jackie Ricketson who facilitated the Broncos' offense all season, ranking sixth in the league with 3.5 assists per game.
CPP also tallied four student-athletes on the CCAA All-Academic list.
Baseball
The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team continued to succeed in the CCAA, beating out a slow start to win the South Division with a record of 27-11, going 34-22 on the season.
The Broncos closed out the regular season on an 11-game winning streak to earn the second-seed in the conference postseason tournament. Earning postseason wins against Cal State Monterey Bay and UC San Diego, CPP claimed the sixth and final spot in the NCAA West Regional Championship. In the first round of the West Regional, the Broncos had a rematch with top-seeded Chico State, winning in extra innings.
The Broncos racked up a number of postseason accolades as 10 athletes were named to the CCAA All-Conference teams while Brennan McKenize was named the conference Freshman of the Year.
Cody Martin was named NCBWA All-West Region First-Team while
Chris Stratton and
Daniel Pitts received West Region Honorable Mention.
Closing out the year, pitching duo
Jeff Bain and
Kyle Dohy were selected in the 2017 MLB draft, going back to back in the 16
th round. Bain was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks while Dohy was picked by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Men's Track & Field
The 2017 track & field season saw another trip to the national level as well as a number of individual medalists in the conference championships.
The Broncos tallied two conference champions as
Brandon Ferguson crossed the finish line in 30:37.07 to take gold in the 10,000-meter race while
Paul Bentz earned gold in the discus with a toss of 47.41-meters. CPP finished the conference championships with a total of 12 medalists to take third-place in the team scoring.
Mark Huizar and
Damani Brown represented the green and gold at Nationals. Huizar earned his first All-American accolades, finished the 10,000-meter run in 29:54.54 to claim eighth-place while Brown took fifth-place in the javelin with a mark of 219-0 ft.
During the season, Huizar also set a school record, running the 5,000-meter run in 14:03.96 at the Bryan Clay Invite at Azusa Pacific University.
Academically, the Broncos landed eight athletes on the CCAA All-Academic list for spring.
Women's Track & Field
The CPP women's track & field team finished the conference championship with three medalists to take fifth-place overall.
Winning a CCAA championship was
Xjaedah Williams who crossed the finish line in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.18. Also medaling was
Calene Morris in the 5K and
Deirdre Mercado in the javelin.
CPP had another school record broken in the season as
Araseli Servin set a record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, clocking in at 10:17.55.
Morris was the lone performer for the Broncos at nationals, finishing 20
th overall in the 5K with a time of 17:17.12.
Academically, the women's track & field team tallied 14 on the CCAA All-Academic list for the spring term.
