CHICO, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona men's cross country solidified itself as the No. 2 team in the conference Saturday with a strong showing at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships.

Three Broncos earned All-CCAA honors by placing within the top 15 overall. Brothers Ryan Carrell and John Carrell placed at No. 7 and No. 8 respectively while Mark Huizar received CCAA Freshman of the Year recognition as he finished 13th at 25:18.3.

"Mark has been great and he stepped up huge for us today," Ryan said. "He's a big part of why we did well today and everyone on our team is ready to get after it at regionals in two weeks."

CPP will get another shot at racing past Chico State at the NCAA Division II West Region Championships, which will be held Nov. 9 in Spokane, Wash. The Wildcats captured the 12th-straight CCAA title on Saturday.

For Ryan Carrell, he completed his fourth CCAA Championships race with an impressive fourth All-CCAA honor. For his brother John, a transfer from Cal State Fullerton, it marked his first career All-CCAA accolade. Ryan ran to a time of 24:58.3 while John posted a 25:01.7 mark.

CPP teammates John Dominguez, Brandon Haugen and Teague Senninger raced well together and ended up finishing 17th, 18th and 19th respectively. Both Dominguez and Senninger recorded personal bests with times of 25:33.4 and 25:44.9.

Also running well for the Broncos were sophomore Garrett Pankratz at 26:30.8 and Cristian Arranaga at 26:38.0.

Ranked 17th nationally in the latest Division II poll, CPP will now shift its focus to the West Region Championships coming up in two weeks. Saturday's second-place finish marked a two-spot improvement from the Broncos' 2012 result at the conference meet.

This marks the second time in three seasons that a CPP runner has received the CCAA Freshman of the Year recognition. Haugen took home the honor in 2011 and Huizar picked up the title Saturday.
