Dinh Shatters 10K Record to Bolster Bid for Nationals

Tiffany Dinh's 10,000-meter time of 35:00.56 ranks second at the NCAA Division II level so far in 2013.

WALNUT, Calif. - Competing on one of track and field's grandest stages, Cal Poly Pomona stars Tiffany Dinh and Lizette Huerta put on quite a show Thursday.

The first of six Broncos to compete at the Mt. SAC Relays this week, both Dinh and Huerta put in strong "B" provisional qualifying marks to heighten their chances of earning a spot at the NCAA Division II National Championships to be held in Pueblo, Colo., from May 23 through May 25.

Late Thursday night, Dinh placed second in the 10,000-meter race with a time of 35:00.56. That mark shatters the school record, previously set at 35:10.9 by Sherie Roach in 1987. Thursday's mark also represents a 45-second improvement on Dinh's personal best, which was the 35:45.87 she ran last year at Cal State L.A. to earn a spot at nationals.

On Thursday afternoon, Huerta - a sophomore from Ontario - turned in a dominating performance in the 1,500-meter run to also post a "B" provisional qualifying mark.

Competing in a section of the event that featured Division I competitors from schools such as Idaho, UCLA and Arizona, Huerta ran a personal-best time of 4:33.89 to finish fourth. The 4:33.89 mark represents the fifth-best mark in CPP program history. To watch a video of Huerta's race on Thursday, click here.

The provisional qualifiers from Dinh and Huerta are the 15th and 16th so far for the Broncos' men's and women's track and field teams in 2013. On the conference leaderboard, Huerta's Thursday time ranks No. 3 among 1,500-meter performances in 2013. Dinh's 10K mark is first in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) this year and second nationally.

Joining Huerta and Dinh in competition at the Mt. SAC Relays are fellow Broncos Vincent Huitt, Heather Corder, Tiffany Dinh, Ryan Carrell and John Carrell. To watch Broncos' track and field being featured in Episode Two of Bronco Athletics TV, click here.

The other top stars on the Broncos' men's and women's track and field squads will be busy tallying top marks Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational. CPP's long list of "B" provisional qualifiers features key contributions from Jillian Schmidt, Angela Garcia, Makayla Jacoub, Nicole Worden, Samantha Swanson, Justin Ellerbee, Kaleb Trembly and Connor Birtwhistle.
