POMONA, Calif. – In a wonderful start to Homecoming and Family Weekend, the Cal Poly Pomona Intercollegiate Athletics department honored its Hall of Fame legends Friday at the "Evening of Champions" event.
The Broncos recognized the current 51 Hall of Fame members and also inducted a new five-person Class of 2014, which includes Tabreshia C. Lawrence-McIntyre, Karen Miller, Ruth Van't Land-Parkes, Jim Sackett and Lisa Ulmer.
University president Dr. J. Michael Ortiz opened the night with a welcome that focused on how much CPP appreciates the legacy that the now 56 Hall of Fame members have left on Bronco Athletics.
Fifteen of the current Hall of Fame members were in attendance at the event held in the Bronco Student Center.
The group of 15 included: Susan Gozansky, Don Hogan and Lorelee Miller of the Induction Class of 1986; Reginald Southerland from the Class of 1987; Romualdo Ochoa and Paul Scranton of the Class of 1988; Barney Anooshian, Gary Burnett, Alan Fowlkes, Ernest Gee, Kenneth Martin, Musiette McKinney and Jon McNeil from the Class of 1992; and Suzy Brazney and Darrell Miller of the Class of 1994.
The five newest inductees received their Hall of Fame plaques from Director of Athletics
Brian Swanson and then gave eloquent speeches as they shared memories of their time at Cal Poly Pomona.
Bronco basketball alum Michael Oliver served as the Master of Ceremonies and after Swanson closed out the BSC event with his own comments, the entire 260-person crowd walked to Kellogg Gym for the unveiling of the new Hall of Fame lobby.
Selected Quotes from the CeremonyDarrell Miller, 1994 Inductee speaking on behalf of current Hall of Fame members"All of us have been taught my somebody. Someone did something to make us who we are. I can never pay back what Cal Poly did for me and I'm still trying to pay it forward. What are we going to do to continue to make Cal Poly Pomona the best state university in the United States and California? How are we going to invest to make sure that those that come after us have a better place to go to school?"
Lisa Ulmer, 2014 Inductee"Without a doubt, Coach Darlene May helped mold me into the person I am today. However I know that I wouldn't be standing here tonight if it wasn't for my family... To everybody here, thank you so much for this unforgettable evening. I'm very proud and honored to be inducted into the Cal Poly Pomona Hall of Fame."
Tabreshia C. Lawrence-McIntyre, 2014 Inductee"I definitely know that my life wouldn't be the same if I hadn't gone to Cal Poly Pomona. I would have never had the confidence that I have in myself as an educator and as a parent... I just want to thank all of you for supporting athletes because we all know how hard it is. Thank you and I love you and I hope you enjoy your evening."
Ruth Van't Land-Parkes, 2014 Inductee"This is a great honor and I'm truly grateful for this award. I'm here tonight because I've been so blessed and surrounded by so many wonderful people who supported me during my time at Cal Poly. Not only was I loved and supported by my family, friends and fans while I played here, but most of them cheered me on since I was that little toddler who stole my sister's and brother's soccer ball and slept with it in my crib."
Jim Sackett, 2014 Inductee"It's a privilege for me to be a part of this elite group of athletes who have joined us and who were contributing before us. To think that it would be possible that I'd be elected into a Hall of Fame with the people before me... the only reason that I'm here is because of you, the athletes. You did the work to get where you are."
Karen Miller, 2014 InducteeFor all the former inductees of the Hall of Fame, thank you for giving of yourself to Cal Poly and our department through the years. We appreciate your support then and we still do. For all those that are being inducted tonight, congratulations. I take great pride in being inducted in your class. Thank you for 26 years at the ranch, it's a wonderful place and go Broncos, go!
