CLEVELAND - With women's cross country and women's soccer leading the way, a total of 24 Cal Poly Pomona student-athletes earned Academic Achievement Awards for 2011-12, the Division II Athletics Directors Association (D2ADA) officials announced last week.
Out of the 24 Broncos featured on the list, five are women's soccer student-athletes and five others competed in women's cross country.
"We are very proud of the dedication these student-athletes have shown in the classroom," CPP Academic Counselor
Scott Tsuji said. "It's important to honor and celebrate the successful balance between academics and athletics. This group of honorees competes at such a high level athletically while also excelling in their degree pursuit."
The Academic Achievement Awards is a program that recognizes the academic accomplishments of student-athletes at the Division II level. A record number of institutions (118) and student-athletes (4,492) are being recognized for the 2011-12 Academic Achievement Awards.
In order for a student-athlete to receive an Academic Achievement Award, he or she: must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale; must have attended a minimum of two years of college level work; and must have been an active member of an intercollegiate team during his/her last academic year.
In late July, California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Commissioner Robert J. Hiegert
announced the 2011-12 conference's All-Academic Team that featured 41 Bronco student-athletes. It marked the fifth-straight year that 40 or more Broncos have received the honor.
